A record crowd of 84,067 attended this day and saw champion mare Miss Andretti and star filly Gold Edition stage a magnificent battle in the Group 1 The Age Classic with the former prevailing. In the day's feature race, the Group 1 Emirates Stakes, battling jockey Nikita Beriman provided a fairytale story when she rode $101 chance Tears I Cry to an upset victory to become the first female jockey to win a Group 1 race in Melbourne.

Trainer Pat Carey achieved a career highlight on this day when he trained Arapaho Miss to win the Crown Oaks, his first Group 1 victory. A crowd of more than 95,000 was present at Flemington.

Grey gelding Efficient became the first horse since the legendary Phar Lap to win the Victoria Derby and the Melbourne Cup in successive years. Michael Rodd was the jockey in both wins and this was his first victory in Australia's greatest horse race. A crowd of 102,411 was in attendance.

The 2007 Melbourne Cup Carnival opened in spectacular fashion as 115,705 people saw the David Hayes-trained Kibbutz emerge as a future staying star with a dominant win in the Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby. The win gave jockey Craig Williams his first victory in Australia's premier three-year-old classic.

Trainer Mark Kavanagh was to become one of the major personalities of the 2007 Spring Racing Carnival and kicked off in style when his mare Devil Moon, ridden by Corey Brown, took out the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes. The beaten brigade included subsequent Emirates Melbourne Cup winner Efficient and Cox Plate winner El Segundo.

Great expectation greeted this raceday, the first at Flemington after a ten-month layoff during which a new track was laid at Australia's most famous racecourse. Champion jockey Darren Beadman teamed with star WA galloper Marasco to win the feature race, the inaugural running of the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes.
