The Cup's history dates back to 1861 where only a few thousand people turned out for the premiere race and the winner received a few hundred dollars worth of rewards. These days the race is the highlight of the Spring Racing Carnival which is a four-day horse racing spectacular including Australian and International entrants all looking for a place in racing history.

Nov. 1 2005 - Makybe Diva wins her third Melbourne Cup in a row. The mare outran runner-up On A Jeune and 3rd placed Xcellent to take the 2005 Melbourne Cup and make Australian Racing history.
